Biological Budget An Introduction to the biodiversity in Narragansett Bay Adapted from the following resource: Introduction The goal of this activity is to create a balanced food web with organisms that can be found in Narragansett Bay.The purpose is to familiarize you with some of the organisms that can be found in the bay and how they function in a balanced ecosystem.
The concept that you will be investigating in this activity is biodiversity. What is biodiversity?Biodiversity is defined as having a variety of organisms as well as biological communities. Why is it important? That’s what we are about to find out! Materials Before beginning this activity make sure that you have the following materials:
Poster Board
Species cards
Markers/Pencils
Glue/Tape
Procedure 1.Examine the different species that you can use. 2.Decide as a group which species will go in your ecosystem 3.Create a balanced budget outline.(It is important to do this before gluing/taping your organisms to the poster board. You have a budget of $1000.Each species is worth a certain monetary amount.Try to spend your entire budget and create as much biodiversity as possible.Remember that if an organism costs $20, it is going to need to eat $20 worth of food.So make sure that you have enough food supply for your ecosystem to be balanced. You can use a species more than once.) 4.After you have selected your organisms and balanced your biological budget, glue your organisms to the poster board and draw lines connecting them with their predator-prey relationships. Each animal must have at least one line draw to it; some will have multiple lines.
